Advancing Skills-Based Transitions: Tuscany Hosts Strategic Workshop for TRAILS Pilot

17/07/2025

On 03 July 2025, the Region of Tuscany hosted a full-day strategic workshop in Siena as part of TRAILS. The event was held at ITS Vita and convened a broad range of stakeholders from the regional employment and education ecosystem, including representatives from public services, training institutions, and innovation partners.

The workshop, led by TRAILS partner SkillLab, marked a milestone in the design phase of the Tuscan pilot. Its objective was to define the operational and technical parameters necessary for implementing a regional experiment focused on improving how individuals are matched with relevant training opportunities, based on their skills and aspirations.

This initiative forms part of TRAILS’ broader research into the potential of personalised skill assessments to enhance participation in training across Europe. By generating and applying detailed skills intelligence, the study seeks to better align training pathways with evolving labour market needs, empowering individuals to make informed and strategic career decisions. With the active involvement of public authorities and education providers across Europe, TRAILS is conducting a collaborative experimental study alongside key regional partners, including the Region of Tuscany. The pilot run in the Italian region will also assess how technology can enhance collaboration between job seekers, employment services, and education providers, contributing to more efficient and equitable pathways to employment.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in collaborative sessions that analysed the current processes guiding individuals from unemployment to training or job placement. The group identified areas where technology could streamline access, personalise support, and better align training provision with labour market needs. In addition, the workshop addressed key elements such as data integration, system interoperability, privacy considerations, and content adaptation.

The outcomes of the workshop include a set of clearly defined workflows and workstreams that will guide the implementation of the pilot later this year. The Region of Tuscany is now well-positioned to initiate the setup phase, ensuring that the pilot aligns with both regional priorities and the overall vision of the TRAILS project.

Following the progress in Tuscany, the next TRAILS pilot experiment will take place in Borås, Sweden, on 29 August 2025. This upcoming workshop will engage local stakeholders in a similar co-design process to prepare for the Swedish pilot.
